Pontoon Beach, IL (September 18, 2008) Mike Harrison of Highland, IL just edged out Kevin Weaver to win the opening night of the UMP DIRTcar Modified Mania. Harrison started on the pole and led all thirty laps of the main event. However, Weaver, who started eighth, made a late race charge to the front by using the cushion around the top came up just short of snatching the win from Harrison.
Harrison used the low groove around the track to lead the entire event, however on the final lap, Harrison moved up exiting turn four and Weaver dove down to the inside of him as they came to the checkered flag and the two crossed the line side-by-side with Harrison just a nose ahead at the start/finish line.

Randle Sweeney started on the outside of the front row and battled with Harrison for the lead for much of the first half of the event. Sweeney would search around looking for a faster line and would fall back to fourth as Donovan Lodge and Matt Mevert would get by him. Then on lap sixteen, Sweeney would spin in turn two while running fourth and collect the fifth place car of Tim Hancock. Hancock suffered a flat in the incident and both cars had to restart at the rear.

Lodge would challenge Harrison for the lead for much of the remaining distance, but would have to settle for third behind Harrison and Weaver. Mevert would finish in the fourth spot with Chris Moore rounding out the top five. Current UMP DIRTcar Modified National point leader Jeff Leka would finish in the sixth spot. Bobby Bittle would win the hard charger award as he finished seventh after starting twenty-second. Bobby Martintoni, Brandon Lennox and Jerry Grither completed the top ten.

Everett Bradham, who won this event back in 2004, found trouble as he clipped the big ute tire on the infield as he exited turn two, which sent his car over onto it's top. Bradham would walk away uninjured, but suffered a badly damaged racecar.
