Pontoon Beach, IL (September 3rd, 2010) A great field of 123 race cars were on hand to kick off their Labor Day weekend at Tri-City Speedway.

With a solid field of 25 UMP DIRTcar Super Late Models on hand, it didn’t take long for the action to heat up. Michael Kloos and Rickey Frankel battled lap after lap for the entire twenty-five lap distance for the top spot. Frankel took the lead at the drop of the green flag, but Kloos found his way past Frankel for the lead on lap four, but the caution would wave before another lap could be completed and that would give Frankel the lead again on the restart. Frankel would take advantage of the situation and hold Kloos off for the remainder of the race, even though the race was slowed several times including a big six car wreck in turns three and four on lap nine. That crash would eliminate all six cars involved (Tim Ratajczyk, Dewaye Kiefer, Brent Kreke, Brant Kehrer, John Beck and Chad Zobrist) and cause tempers to flare. Mark Voigt also had a run of bad luck that all but ended his hopes of repeating as track champion in the Late Model division at Tri-City Speedway. Voigt lost a left rear tire while battling for the third spot. His crew would get the tire replaced under the caution, only to lose the left rear tire again later in the race. In the end, it was Frankel holding off the challenges of Kloos to earn the win. Kloos was second with Billy Laycock taking third. Bobby Pierce would finish in the fourth spot with Claude Walker rounding out the top five.

Rusty Griffaw was on a mission in the UMP DIRTcar Modified division. Griffaw’s night got off to a rough start after starting last in his heat race and while working his way toward the front, was tagged by another car and sent spinning at the exit of turn four. Griffaw would restart at the tail of the field on the restart of the heat race with just four laps remaining and would climb his way back to a second place finish. That would give him the sixth and final starting spot in the Dash, which would only take one lap before he was leading. That would give Griffaw the pole starting spot in the main event and allow him to pretty well dominate the event. His only challenges came on the restarts as Kyle Byerline would make a couple of runs on the low side to challenge for the lead. But Griffaw was too strong and powered away to take the win. Byerline would get second with Marty Smith, Jr. charging to a third place finish from his eleventh place starting spot. Rick Conoyer would also charge through the field from the fourteenth starting spot to finish fourth. Bobby Regot would round out the top five.

Scott Weber once again dominated the UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model main event. Weber led all twenty laps and won handily over second place finish Bobby Pierce. Mark Oller would take third with Aaron Heck finishing fourth and Bobby Martintoni fifth. Pierce and Oller would have a great battle for the second spot. Oller was holding off Pierce for the second spot until late in the race when Pierce took advantage of lapped traffic to make his move around Oller for second.

Danny Ems led all fifteen laps of the Street Stock main event as he claimed the win. The big story was second place finisher Tommy Gegg. Gegg started twenty-fourth in another driver’s car after his car suffered mechanical problems in his heat race. Gegg would charge through the field to earn the second spot. Jimmy Bell would finish third with Richie Gabriel taking fourth. Todd Erickson would round out the top five.

Earl Pryor would earn his first win at Tri-City Speedway in the Factory Stock division. Willie Myers would get the lead early on and lead the first six laps of the twelve lap main event. But Pryor would work his way past Myers and get the lead and then hold off the challenges of Myers for the rest of the way to earn the win. Myers was second with Jordan Suhre taking third. Justin Suhre would finish fourth with Travis Horner completing the top five. Jordan Suhre’s third place finish brought hiim to within twenty-nine points of the current point leader Trevor Isaak.

Season Championships are next Friday, September 10th for all five divisions.
