GRANITE CITY, Ill. (May 1) — Most drivers are smiling in victory lane, but the look on the face of Billy Faust of Lebanon, Ill., wasn't the look of your typical winner. "I'm not sure what happened there at the end," Faust said after Thursday's UMP DirtCar special at Tri-City Speedway, "but I hate to win em' like this."
On a night when NHRA drag racers driving Crate Late Models was supposed to make headlines at Tri-City, a controversial finish between Faust and Brian Shirley stole the show. Faust inherited the lead from Shirley with two laps to go in the 25-lap feature after track officials ruled Shirley intentionally spun the lapped car of Dewayne Kiefer. Faust reached victory lane while Shirley was sent to the tail.
